Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Cozumel has maintained stable tourism levels during the Holy Week period, with hotel occupancy aligning with last year’s figures and a cumulative two-percentage-point increase so far in 2026, according to local hotel association officials.

Beatriz Tinajero Tarriba, president of the Cozumel Hotel Association, highlighted that the island has sustained its tourist activity despite ongoing challenges with air connectivity. She noted that the return of the Monterrey-Cozumel flight, which had been paused, and the confirmation of a year-round route from Canada represent significant advancements.

“This flight was something we needed and will be key for the summer season, a period where we have historically lagged behind other Quintana Roo destinations,” Tinajero Tarriba explained.

International circumstances have also benefited the island. A crisis in Cuba has led tour operators to seek alternatives, with Cozumel emerging as an attractive option. This prompted Air Canada to reinstate its year-round frequency. Additionally, the situation in the Middle East has encouraged U.S. tourists to turn to closer, safer markets, where Cozumel positions itself as a reliable destination.

The hotel association president emphasized the importance of promoting that Cozumel’s beaches are free of sargassum, a differentiating factor compared to other Caribbean destinations.

“We want to show real-time images of our beaches and reinforce the campaign for Cozumel as an island for children and families,” she said.

The strategy involves giving greater visibility to family activities and authentic nature experiences, strengthening the tourist products that distinguish the island. In coordination with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, a joint campaign is being prepared to position Cozumel as a safe, sargassum-free destination with ideal attractions for family tourism.
