KANTUNILKÍN, QR — With profound nostalgia and sadness, Maya dignitaries and community members lamented the death of prayer leader Reyes Chuc Cocom, 75, yesterday afternoon. His death was attributed to natural causes.

Donaciano Poot Chan, the president of the Consejo Supremo Maya (Maya Supreme Council), stated that a great prayer leader has been lost, one who was always an advocate for the town's traditions.

Reyes Chuc Cocom consistently supported the work of the church of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción, the patron saint of Kantunilkín.

Death of Prayer Leader Moves Kantunilkín; Remembered for Prayers in Native Language

Poot Chan added that at all offerings of food to the Inmaculada, the prayer leader was present to guide the new generations. He was notable because his prayers were conducted in his native language.

The last ceremonies he led were the offerings in honor of the Virgen de la Asunción, celebrated this past August 15. More recently, he was participating in the preparations for the traditional Convite, which will take place on November 2 as part of the preamble to the town's festivities.
