Yucatan, Mexico — A new cold front will bring adverse weather conditions to the Yucatan Peninsula over the coming days, with rain, strong winds, and temperatures dropping as low as 13°C, state officials announced.
The Yucatan State Government reported that Cold Front 41, along with its pre-frontal trough, will generate increased rainfall potential, stronger wind gusts, and a subsequent temperature drop across various municipalities.
Hernán Hernández Rodríguez, head of the State Civil Protection Coordination (Procivy), said based on meteorological models, the frontal system will enter the region on Tuesday, March 17. However, effects will begin to be felt from the afternoon of Monday, March 16, due to associated atmospheric instability.
Forecast Timeline
On Monday, March 16, heavy rains accompanied by electrical activity are forecast for the northeast and southeast regions of Yucatan, with moderate precipitation expected in the central, southwest, and northwest zones.
Starting Tuesday, March 17, the frontal system’s entry will establish a “norte” weather event, with wind gusts of 65 to 75 kilometers per hour along the coast and 40 to 50 kilometers per hour inland. Waves of two to three meters near the coast and up to four meters offshore are also expected.
Lowest Temperatures Expected
Following the frontal system’s passage, a drop in minimum temperatures is anticipated during the morning of Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20.
- Southern cone of the state: Between 13°C and 15°C
- Central, northeast, and northwest Yucatan: Between 14°C and 16°C
- Yucatan coast: Between 17°C and 21°C
Authorities noted these temperatures will be accompanied by wind and humidity conditions that could generate a lower perceived temperature, especially during the early morning hours.
Safety Recommendations
Civil Protection officials urged residents to stay alert to official advisories and take preventive measures, especially in coastal areas and communities expecting heavy rain or strong winds.
Key recommendations include:
- Avoid maritime activities during the “norte” event
- Secure objects that could be blown away by wind
- Stay informed through official sources and weather reports
- Exercise extreme caution in maritime navigation and fishing
- Take measures to protect against the temperature drop, particularly during early morning hours
The State Monitoring and Alert Center maintains permanent surveillance of the frontal system’s evolution and will issue timely updates if significant forecast changes occur.
