Mérida, Yucatan — The cattle screwworm has now spread to nearly 94% of Yucatan, with 1,670 total cases detected across 100 municipalities, state agricultural officials reported.

During the past week, the Rural Development Department (Seder) identified 16 new cases affecting various animal species including birds, cattle, cats, dogs, and pigs.

The new infections were concentrated in Mérida with seven cases, followed by two in Umán, and one each in Kopomá, Huhí, Cacalchén, Hunucmá, Ticul, Seyé, and Santa Elena.

Animals affected by myiasis—the medical term for screwworm infestation—presented open wounds on various body parts including the chin, base of the ear, vulva, cervical region, hooves, metatarsus, dorsal region, gluteal region, and metacarpus.

Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene measures and promptly treating any animal injuries to prevent larval infestations.

Residents who detect screwworm infestations are urged to immediately report them through official channels at 800-751-2100 or via WhatsApp at 553-996-4462, where authorities provide treatment within 24 hours at no cost.
