Progreso, Yucatan — The Carnival Valor cruise ship brought 4,801 visitors to this coastal port on Thursday, providing a significant boost to local businesses and marking a busy day for tourism in the region.
The ship docked at 6:43 a.m. from Cozumel, Quintana Roo, and departed at 3:00 p.m. bound for New Orleans, Louisiana. On board were 3,691 passengers and 1,110 crew members.
Tourists flocked to Progreso’s beaches and waterfront promenade, where calm seas and sunny weather created ideal conditions for visitors. The warm weather encouraged many to spend extended time along the coast.
Local service providers noted the economic impact was particularly strong due to the presence of younger tourist groups. “These types of visitors typically generate more economic activity, both in products and services,” said Margarita Chi, a masseuse working along the waterfront. “This helps with recovery after the slow season.”
Waiters in the area reported increased sales, especially of beverages, as favorable weather kept more tourists in port throughout the day. “The weather conditions meant more tourists stayed in the port, which translated to higher sales,” said waiter Miguel Ricalde.
Visitors explored the waterfront area, dined at restaurants, shopped at local businesses, and participated in various tourist activities offered by service providers. Many also booked tours to archaeological sites, cenotes, and other beaches along the Yucatan coast.
The Carnival Valor was one of three cruise ships to visit Progreso this week. On Tuesday, the Carnival Breeze arrived with 6,103 visitors (4,763 passengers and 1,340 crew), and on Wednesday, the Disney Magic brought 3,688 visitors.
