Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Despite performances by artists during Playa del Carmen’s Carnaval, small hotels in the tourist destination saw only a marginal increase in occupancy, according to a local industry leader.

Offner Arjona, president of the Playa del Carmen Small Hotels Association, said occupancy remained above 60 points, in line with projections for the high season. He noted that the festival did not create a significant difference in hotel bookings.

“For Carnaval to make a real difference in occupancy, it requires follow-up, discipline, and evaluating tourist preferences to make them want to visit the destination,” Arjona said.

He also emphasized the need for better infrastructure, pointing out that while events are held, the city lacks major venues for large-scale performances. As an example, he cited the limited visibility at Plaza 28 de Julio.

“If we want a destination for entertainment tourism, we have to invest,” Arjona concluded.
