Cancún traffic officer removed after corruption video surfaces

Scene from video showing Cancún traffic officer accepting money

Cancún, Mexico — After a video went viral showing a member of the Traffic Directorate receiving money from a man, the Internal Affairs Unit of this corporation removed him from his position and opened an investigation file to clarify this incident.

The video in question, which began circulating on social media this afternoon, shows a man standing next to unit 5664 who suddenly takes money out of his wallet and then puts his hands into the patrol car to hand cash to the officer.

Through a statement published hours after this video was disseminated, the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit reported that it opened an investigation file against this officer, while simultaneously removing him from his position preventively, pending the necessary procedures to clarify the facts.

The secretariat finally assured that no more acts of corruption will be tolerated within the ranks of this corporation.

“The SMSCyT reiterates that behaviors contrary to institutional principles will not be tolerated, and reaffirms its commitment to human rights, legality, integrity, ethics, and service vocation in police action,” it concluded.
