Cancún Tourist Police Coordinator Transferred to Ciudad Juárez on Corruption Allegations

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Erick Gutiérrez Cossío, the coordinator of Cancún’s Tourist Police Directorate, known within the force as “Huracán,” was transferred to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, after federal forces arrested him in Cancún, officials said.

The arrest took place on Friday, Sept. 25, at a property in Supermanzana 32, near the intersection of Chichén Itzá and Isla Contoy avenues, where federal personnel were deployed.

After his detention, Gutiérrez Cossío was taken to the Cancún offices of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) and later flown to Chihuahua.

According to information in the National Registry of Detentions, the police commander was booked into the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Ciudad Juárez, where he was placed at the disposal of authorities pending further proceedings.

Following the operation, the property where he was detained was placed under guard by personnel from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO).

Reports suggest Gutiérrez Cossío is being investigated for alleged corruption. Federal authorities have not publicly disclosed the specific charges against him or details of the judicial case that prompted his transfer to Chihuahua.

Local reports have also linked the arrest to the so-called Operativo Enjambre, a strategy that has led to investigations and detentions of security officials. There has been no official confirmation, however, that “Huracán’s” capture is part of that operation.

Gutiérrez Cossío had served since August 2025 as acting director of the Tourist Police Directorate, an agency under the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic of Benito Juárez.

Authorities have confirmed only that the commander was detained in Cancún and transferred to Ciudad Juárez to be placed at the disposal of federal authorities, while the charges against him and his legal status are expected to be clarified as the case moves forward.
