Cancún, Quintana Roo — Fifteen middle and high schools in Cancún will plant between 450 and 750 native trees this month as part of a municipal reforestation and environmental education program.

Fernando Haro Salinas, director of Ecology for Benito Juárez municipality, announced that officials selected 15 schools from a pool of up to 50 applicants for the second phase of the “Arboriza Cancún en tu escuela” (Plant Cancún in Your School) initiative. Each school will receive 30 to 50 trees.

The selected institutions include Cetmar 41; campuses 1, 2, and 4 of Conalep; Cbtis 272; Cecyte 2 and 3; various technical secondary schools; and Colegio de Bachilleres 3.

Haro Salinas said authorities are currently holding informational sessions with school administrators and staff to coordinate planting logistics, which will involve active participation from students and teachers.

“The goal is to plant trees at schools, especially to involve young people and foster environmental awareness from an early age,” Haro Salinas stated. He emphasized that a key objective is for students to accompany the trees’ growth throughout their time at the institution.

The trees come from a donation of over 11,000 specimens secured from the Mérida City Council, which will help strengthen school green spaces and contribute to mitigating climate change effects in urban areas.

This second phase aims not only to increase vegetation coverage in educational spaces but also to establish schools as hubs for environmental education and community participation in Cancún.
