CANCÚN, Q. ROO — The Socca 2025 Cup, also known as the World Cup of 6-a-side football, will mark a before and after for Cancún. The event, which will bring together 48 countries, will be a showcase of the destination's potential as a host for major international competitions, from November 28 to December 7 of this year, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The director of the Municipal Sports Institute, Alejandro Luna López, stated that this tournament will serve as a "general rehearsal" to demonstrate the logistical, tourist, and sporting capabilities of the municipality.
"This is the perfect scenario to think about 2026, about a Fan Fest, about having national teams come to our city to set up base, and to allow us to use this moment to generate sports tourism," he affirmed.
The Socca 2025 Cup will attract over 3,000 visitors, including players, delegations, and fans, generating an estimated economic spillover of 100 million pesos in lodging, transportation, food, and tourist activities during the 10 days of competition.
The tournament will take place in a corridor spanning from Malecón Tajamar to Avenida Tulum in Cancún, aiming to ensure the economic impact benefits the city center, with high hotel occupancy in that zone.
This event gains more relevance due to the ongoing efforts by the state government for Cancún and Tulum to host international teams during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, either as training camps or as points for a Fan Fest celebration.
Regardless of the final decision from FIFA and the Mexican government, the municipality is already preparing a sports and recreational agenda leading up to 2026, the official explained.
The Municipal Sports Institute plans to conduct physical activations in neighborhoods, public screenings of matches, and free community spaces so that citizens can enjoy the Mexican National Team's games and other World Cup matches.
"We will be in different neighborhoods working with the people to generate this excitement that sport creates, what football creates in people," he said. "And to socialize and generate social cohesion when watching the national team's matches and other games, so that the World Cup fever is felt in our city."
With these strategies, the city council seeks to leverage the football fervor not only to promote physical activity but also to drive a culture of peace and community integration. The goal is to continue consolidating Cancún as the capital of sport and hospitality in Mexico.
