Cancún, Quintana Roo — Fear is growing in one of Cancún’s traditional neighborhoods as residents of Supermanzana 23 warn of a troubling rise in violence that they say has worsened over the past six months, disrupting the area’s tranquility.

According to testimonies gathered, one recent case involved a man attacked without apparent reason while walking down the street. His relative, Teresa Jiménez, said the assailant followed him and struck him with a blunt object, causing injuries that could have been fatal. Although the alleged attacker admitted the assault to authorities, he was not detained after retreating to his home.

The situation has generated fear among neighbors, who say they feel vulnerable due to the lack of effective response. Despite formal complaints filed with the State Prosecutor’s Office, residents claim the processes move slowly while the alleged aggressors remain free.

Residents maintain this is not an isolated incident. In recent weeks, at least three similar incidents have been reported, along with videos circulating on social media showing episodes of violence in the area. “The situation has become unsustainable,” they stated.

Some residents link this phenomenon to the recent arrival of foreign individuals, stemming from changes in U.S. migration policies, though they clarify this is not a generalization but rather specific behaviors that need addressing.

Faced with this situation, residents issued an urgent call to bolster security, noting that the police booth at the nearby park does not operate consistently. They also requested intervention from immigration authorities and announced plans to seek dialogue with municipal government officials to demand actions that restore peace to their community.
