Cancún, Mexico — Residents of Cancún have reported that the water utility company Aguakan is allegedly cheating users by pumping air instead of water through the pipes, resulting in increasingly higher bills. One resident commented that the situation has been reported in Region 107, but there has been no response from the concessionaire.
"We are sure this is happening everywhere. There are times when instead of pumping water, only air comes out, and that generates an extra expense for us," the resident expressed.
The resident explained that sometimes the sound of water can be heard, leading one to believe it is pumping, but that is not the case. "The needle on the meter spins and spins, meaning they are charging us for air," the resident said.
On Isla Mujeres, some inhabitants also indicated that the meter registers consumption even when what is circulating is often air or the water pressure is very low.
In Cancún, user complaints and reports range from low water pressure to intermittent service. The company is further accused of failing to meet its demands and obligations. "We have reported the situation, but they do not pay attention to us, and the bills have doubled," said one user.
Residents commented that the problem lies in erroneous measurement. The household meters are connected to a pipeline containing a large amount of air or a very reduced flow of water. This creates the possibility that the mechanism of the consumption meter is activated, registering cubic meters even when very little liquid is passing through.
They emphasized that the company provides an inefficient supply, with old pipes, little maintenance, and scheduled water availability. On many occasions, rooftop water tanks do not fill up completely.
Residents stressed that all of the above generates dissatisfaction because the user pays for a "complete" service but receives a deficient one.
The company acknowledged that its pumping system depends directly on the electrical supply and that service is affected when there are power outages.
