Cancún, Quintana Roo — The General Hospital “Jesús Kumate Rodríguez” in Cancún has activated a biosafety protocol following the detection of a suspected monkeypox case. The patient, who arrived from Playa del Carmen on Wednesday evening, is currently under observation while test results are processed.
Strict Measures Implemented
According to the Quintana Roo Health Services (SESA), led by Secretary Flavio Carlos Rosado, the patient was immediately treated as an infectious-contagious case upon arrival. Strict biosafety protocols were enforced to mitigate any risk of virus transmission.
Health authorities clarified that monkeypox spreads only through direct contact with a patient’s skin lesions, emphasizing that the general public faces no risk if established precautions are followed.
Testing Underway
The case is being processed at the state public health laboratory, one of the most critical facilities in southeastern Mexico. This lab handles samples not only from Quintana Roo but also from five neighboring states. Results are expected within 72 hours.
Rising Cases in the Region
If confirmed, this would mark the fifth suspected case in the state this year—matching the total number reported in all of 2024. In contrast, 46 confirmed cases were recorded in 2023.
Health Secretary Rosado urged the public to remain calm, avoid misinformation, and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as fever, skin rashes, or swollen lymph nodes.
