Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez municipal government has launched a free gender identity change campaign for trans and non-binary residents, running until June 5, 2026, as part of Pride Month activities.

The initiative, coordinated by the Municipal Secretariat of Welfare, the Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity, and the Civil Registry, aims to remove economic, administrative, and social barriers that have historically hindered legal recognition of identity for LGBTIQ+ individuals.

Officials said the process is more than an administrative change — it allows people to access fundamental rights such as health, education, employment, financial services, and official procedures with greater security and dignity, without facing discrimination or document inconsistencies.

The campaign is part of public policies to strengthen inclusion, respect, and equal rights in Benito Juárez, especially during Pride Month, when Cancún has become a key destination for diversity and inclusion in the Mexican Caribbean.

Authorities noted that updated documents help reduce institutional violence and everyday discrimination that many trans people face when dealing with school, work, or medical procedures.

Locations and hours

To facilitate access, several locations have been set up where applicants can submit their documents. The deadline is June 5, 2026, and service hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • Civil Registry Office 01, at Parque de las Palapas, downtown Cancún
  • Offices of the Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity
  • COBUS 101, on Calle 133, Supermanzana 101

Authorities recommend arriving early and ensuring all documents are complete to speed up the process.

Requirements

Applicants must present the following documents in original and two copies:

  • Updated birth certificate
  • Valid official ID (voter ID or passport)
  • Updated CURP (tax ID number)
  • Recent proof of address

The campaign is completely free, providing significant support for those who previously faced high costs for this legal procedure.

Support and guidance

The Directorate of Attention to Sexual Diversity has set up a direct channel for questions and personalized support: phone and WhatsApp at 998 130 9854. Through this line, individuals can receive information on specific requirements, procedural advice, and institutional accompaniment if needed.
