Cancún Emerges Unscathed from Hurricane Beryl, Mayor Vows Restoration Efforts

Cancún has been left relatively unscathed following the passage of category two Hurricane Beryl. The city's acting mayor, Pablo Gutiérrez, announced that Cancún has transitioned to a yellow distancing alert. He stressed that the city has managed to weather the storm with minimal adverse effects, and that over 800 municipal workers are now focused on restoring normalcy as quickly as possible.

Gutiérrez also announced that public transport services have been reinstated, but he urged residents to remain at home and only venture out if absolutely necessary. He revealed that he convened a meeting with the heads of the various first-response departments as soon as the storm hit Quintana Roo on Friday. The aim of the meeting was to strategize and increase efforts to mitigate the impacts of the hurricane.

Gutiérrez, along with staff from Public Services and Civil Protection, have been involved in clean-up efforts, particularly in the hotel zone. They reported only partial flooding at various points along Kukulcán boulevard. He also inspected various parts of the city center to ensure that the necessary work was being done and that the roads were safe for residents.

During the passage of Beryl, 257 people sought refuge in the 51 shelters that were opened. Among them were 33 foreigners, whose consulates were informed of their situation. Additionally, there were nine reports of fallen trees, all of which received prompt attention from the relevant departments. Numerous municipal teams were dispatched to the city streets to carry out necessary work, primarily involving the removal of fallen trees, pruning, green waste collection, cleaning grilles, and assisting stranded citizens.
