Cancún Cathedral Urges Donors to Complete ‘Mil por Mil’ Fundraising Goal for Sanctuary Construction

Construction progress at the new Cancún cathedral sanctuary

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Cancún-Chetumal Diocese announced its “Mil por Mil” fundraising campaign has reached 88% of its goal and is urging donors to contribute the remaining 12% this week to avoid construction delays on the new cathedral sanctuary.

The campaign, launched over a month ago, seeks 1,000 people to donate 1,000 pesos each (approximately $50) to fund the first stage of construction. In a statement on the diocese’s official page, organizers said, “We continue with the ‘Mil por Mil’ campaign where we’re looking for 1,000 people to make a donation of 1,000 pesos—or whatever their heart desires—so we don’t have to halt construction and can continue this historic project that began 10 months ago.”

The religious organization specified that construction of the first stage—the “celebratory center” for sacraments and liturgical worship—began in February. The design incorporates the region’s natural environment with vernacular architecture elements to create “an atmosphere conducive to silence, recollection, prayer, and contemplation.”

The diocese also encourages donations of 5,000 pesos, noting that amount “funds the construction of one square meter” of the project.

According to architectural plans, the first stage will include living flowers and plants decorating the temple, the Main Altar, the Perpetual Adoration Chapel (a space for silence and living presence, open day and night for Eucharistic devotion), confessionals, and crypts for eternal rest available through paid services.

Future Stages

The project outlines three additional phases:

  • Stage 2: Community Center — Modeled after the Good Samaritan parable, this space will serve those in need with a medicine bank, general medical services, counseling center, and migrant shelter with facilities for temporary stays in Cancún.
  • Stage 3: Pastoral Center — Dedicated to pastoral formation needs with convention hall, retreat house, pastoral classrooms, and pastoral co-working spaces.
  • Stage 4: Cultural Center — Featuring museum of relics, sacred art gallery, cinema, library, community gathering spaces, Stations of the Cross garden, and monumental Holy Cross.

Project Timeline

The Catholic Church in Quintana Roo detailed the planned stages, noting dates depend on fundraising:

  • First stage — Celebratory Center — 50 million pesos — 12 months — April 2025 to May 2026
  • Second stage — Community Center — 10 million pesos — Goal to begin first half of 2026
  • Third stage — Pastoral Center — 25 million pesos — Goal to begin second half of 2026
  • Fourth stage — Cultural Center — 15 million pesos — Goal to begin first half of 2027
