Cancún Hotel Zone Tax Proposal Under Business Scrutiny

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Caribbean Business Coordinating Council (CCE) has not yet conducted a formal analysis of the potential impact of a proposed new tax for Cancún’s hotel zone.

However, its president, Javier Carlos Olvera Silveira, acknowledged that this tourism hub faces an urgent need for resources to improve its image and maintenance conditions.

The business leader emphasized that tourism is the main economic engine of Quintana Roo and that practically the entire population of Cancún depends directly or indirectly on this activity.

Therefore, maintaining the hotel zone in optimal conditions—or even raising its standard—represents a strategic challenge for both the business sector and the state government.

Olvera Silveira recalled that after the responsibility for maintaining the hotel zone was returned by Fonatur, the challenge has become even greater.

In that sense, he acknowledged that it is essential to have a clear strategy and sufficient resources to ensure that this emblematic area of the destination does not present visible problems such as potholes, dirt, or lack of maintenance.

“We do not have it entirely clear yet, but we understand that it is an important challenge that the maintenance of the hotel zone has returned to the hands of the state. It is strategic to keep it in good condition; we cannot allow a deteriorated, dirty hotel zone or with infrastructure in poor condition,” he stated.

The president of the CCE specified that, for the moment, the business organization has not internally discussed whether it will support the proposed new tax or not. He explained that before taking a position, it is necessary to thoroughly understand the proposal, analyze its scope, and give the government the opportunity to present and explain the project in detail.

It will be then, he concluded, when the Caribbean Business Coordinating Council can issue an informed opinion and a more concrete position regarding this initiative.
