Cancún, Mexico — Following a temporary closure due to quarantine and restructuring prompted by an outbreak of canine distemper, the Cancún Animal Welfare Center will soon reopen its doors to continue providing services to the community, announced Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta.
The mayor clarified that the closure was due to sanitary protocols and confirmed that staff are carrying out a complete restructuring of the facilities.
“The main reason the center remained closed was the detection of distemper cases in some of the sheltered dogs, which required implementing a strict sanitary protocol to safeguard the health of the remaining animals,” stated the official.
Despite the preventive closure, municipal authorities emphasized that care for the sheltered dogs and cats has been maintained.
Furthermore, she said new protocols are being implemented and warned that if another similar distemper situation were to occur, the center might require another temporary closure, as animal welfare is a priority for the municipal government.
“The pets were not relocated anywhere and remain in the same place,” she noted.
She invited Councilman Chucho Pool, who recently made statements on the topic asking where the animals were located, as well as anyone requiring information, to approach the Animal Welfare Directorate work team directly to resolve their questions.
The mayor said that while the exact date for resuming public services at the center is not yet known, services continue to be provided promptly by addressing citizen reports, so reopening will occur once restructuring work concludes and the location’s sanitation is fully guaranteed.
