Cancún, Mexico — The Mexican Caribbean is emerging as a potential host for an official FIFA Fan Fest during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held across Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council has confirmed that negotiations are underway with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to secure the event for the region.

Cancún as a Leading Candidate for the 2026 FIFA Fan Fest

Rodrigo de la Peña, president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, stated that while the event has not yet been finalized, the proposal is under serious consideration. Plans suggest the Fan Fest could take place on a beach in Cancún.

“This is an ongoing initiative. Specific dates, locations, and activities are still being determined. We are designing a comprehensive package that would include tickets, fan activations, a giant screen viewing area, cultural and culinary experiences, and, of course, the vibrant atmosphere of the Mexican Caribbean,” De la Peña explained.

As part of the strategy, discussions are also being held with airlines to establish new direct routes from Spain, the United Kingdom, and Poland, facilitating international travel for fans during the tournament.

Economic and Promotional Benefits for Quintana Roo

The Fan Fest could bring substantial economic and promotional advantages to Quintana Roo. According to FIFA data, the event in Moscow during the 2018 World Cup in Russia attracted over three million attendees and generated $60 million in economic impact. Similarly, during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, host cities reported an additional $40 million in revenue.

“This event could reinforce Cancún’s reputation as a premier tourist, sporting, and cultural destination. It aligns with a broader state strategy to position the city as a festive hub during the World Cup,” De la Peña added.

Infrastructure Ready for the Challenge

Cancún boasts world-class hotel, aviation, and logistical infrastructure, making it an ideal location to attract fans who may not attend matches in official host cities. The city’s existing network of bars, restaurants, and hotels, which traditionally broadcast live matches, creates a football-friendly atmosphere that could expand to a global scale in 2026.
