Cancún, Mexico — Cancún is poised to become a major medical hub designed to attract Mexican specialists currently residing in the United States. The initiative follows the presentation of a project to the Governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, involving a foreign investment of up to 50 million dollars.

The project's purpose is to establish a medical tourism center in Cancún, which would include the creation of a health sciences university.

“They presented us with a healthcare project to turn the city into a hub to serve Quintana Roo residents, but also our national tourists and people who live in the United States and have chosen Mexico, specifically Quintana Roo; they want it in the northern zone of the state,” stated the governor.

The project involves specialists of Mexican origin who, for various circumstances, moved to live in the United States but are interested in offering quality services from one of the most important tourist centers. This initiative aims to reach visitors as well as the Mexican population in general.

“I am talking about heart specialists, neurologists, trauma surgeons who, through this project, could come to give consultations and perform surgeries. It is a very important group of doctors and I hope to move forward with this great project,” the governor explained.

She added that the included health university project aims to become a breeding ground for doctors, as well as nurses, in response to the high demand from young people to study medicine in the country.

Furthermore, the governor stated there is also interest from U.S. entrepreneurs in investing in aerospace technology development, stemming from the air and rail connectivity offered by the polo del bienestar, or well-being hub, in Chetumal.

“It is a company that is very interested in coming because there are great attractions and we cannot lose sight of the connectivity we have with the East Coast [of the United States],” added the governor.

Governor Lezama led a meeting with more than 100 U.S. investors from various sectors, during which she outlined the advantages of investing in Quintana Roo. These advantages include economic, logistical, and connectivity attractions, as well as infrastructure, competitiveness, and growth projections.

Among these advantages, the governor highlighted the Polo de Desarrollo Económico para el Bienestar (Economic Development Hub for Well-being) in Chetumal. This hub is designed to spur investments in manufacturing, energy, health, agro-industry, real estate, transportation, telecommunications, hospitality, aerospace, technology, logistics, and international commerce.
