Mexico City — The government of Playa del Carmen, headed by Municipal President Estefanía Mercado, has been awarded the Premio a las Mejores Prácticas de Gobiernos Locales (Award for Best Practices of Local Governments) in recognition of its work in strengthening the City Brand. This initiative has allowed for the recovery and promotion of the name that defines the community and is recognized internationally.
“Playa del Carmen is more than just a tourist destination; it represents a vibrant identity, built by generations of women and men who have shaped it with dedication and passion. This recognition is an act of justice towards our history, roots, and dignity as a community,” stated Estefanía Mercado.
The award was presented by the prestigious magazine Alcaldes de México, a publication that disseminates and distinguishes the best management practices in local governments. It was received on behalf of the municipality by the secretary general of the city council, Luis Herrera.
In this context, Estefanía Mercado highlighted that the name change and the strengthening of the City Brand enhances the sense of belonging and local pride in the short term. In the medium term, the goal is to consolidate the presence of Playa del Carmen in economic, cultural, and tourism strategies. In the long term, the aspiration is to maintain a powerful brand that attracts investment, talent, tourism, and opportunities, always with a human and sustainable focus.
Estefanía Mercado underscored that the name Playa del Carmen possesses a value of worldwide recognition that no other name in the region can equal. The unification of the territorial identity with this brand helps to reflect a clear and attractive image to both the community and visitors.
“Strengthening the City Brand allows us to tell a coherent and authentic story: we are a world-class destination, proud of our culture, diversity, and know-how, with a people who prosper with identity and soul,” she concluded.
The Premio a las Mejores Prácticas de Gobiernos Locales, which has been awarded by the magazine Alcaldes de México for 15 years, is one of the most distinguished awards in the country for initiatives that promote efficiency, innovation, and commitment in the management of municipal and state governments throughout Mexico.
