Cancún Accelerates Kukulkán Bridge Construction to Ease Hotel Zone Traffic

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Construction on the Kukulkán Bridge in Cancún’s hotel zone is accelerating, with officials aiming to complete the project by October as part of a broader strategy to alleviate traffic congestion ahead of the opening of the nearby Nichupté Bridge.

The elevated roadway, located at kilometer 13 of the hotel zone, will serve as a key traffic relief point once the Nichupté Bridge begins operating, according to Ricardo Archundia, director of Quintana Roo’s Institute of Tourism Infrastructure (Infratur).

“This project responds to an anticipated need: redistributing vehicle flow once the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge becomes operational,” Archundia explained. The Nichupté Bridge will provide a more direct connection between the city and the hotel zone.

The Kukulkán Bridge will function as a traffic relief node at Plaza Kukulkán, a historically congested area where tourists, service vehicles, and local traffic converge. Its design will separate vehicle streams to eliminate intersections that currently create bottlenecks.

The 770-meter-long structure will feature four lanes, a central median, and continuous ramps. This configuration will allow airport-bound traffic to flow on the elevated section while traffic from the Nichupté Bridge and other roads remains at ground level, improving overall traffic flow.

With an investment exceeding 520 million pesos, the project is part of a coordinated strategy with the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) aimed at modernizing mobility in Cancún amid sustained tourism growth and urban expansion.

The hotel zone currently faces significant mobility challenges, particularly during peak seasons when travel times can increase substantially. The combination of new infrastructure like the Nichupté Bridge and Kukulkán Bridge aims not only to reduce travel times but also to provide alternative routes and increased road capacity.

During construction, temporary traffic adjustments have been implemented, particularly in the lagoon area of Kukulkán Boulevard where deep foundation work with pilings is underway. These modifications include detours and lane changes that will remain in place for the coming weeks as construction progresses in stages.

Authorities noted that such projects address not only immediate needs but also anticipate the destination’s growth, ensuring more efficient and organized mobility for both residents and the millions of visitors who arrive in Cancún each year.
