A video that has gone viral in Yucatán, Mexico, shows a Canadian woman insisting that a Mexican man move his car from a property that she does not own. This incident is one of a series of recent confrontations involving foreigners in the area.
The video follows a recent incident in Mérida, Yucatán, where a young Catalan man was filmed assaulting a woman in a cafe. In this latest incident, the Canadian woman is seen arguing with the Mexican man over a parking issue in Chuburná Puerto. The man questions why she has an issue with his car, to which she responds that he has parked between two houses. The man points out that his car is not blocking her property, saying, "Your house is here, it's free. My car is on the street." When she fails to convince him to move his car, she begins to insult him and threatens to call the police. The man responds, "Don't mess with me, my car is on the street and it's not at your house. I'm not going to move it, you're wrong, leave me alone."
In another recent incident in Mérida, a foreigner insulted a blind man who earns his living by singing in the streets. In an interview with local media, the man, Eulogio, explained that the foreigner told him he had no right to work on the streets. Eulogio responded, "For us it is honest work because we are not taking anything from anyone, I look for the livelihood of my family from this. I don't understand why a foreigner, who has no voice or vote here, has to come and stop our work." He added that he goes out on the streets every day to support his family and that no foreigner should treat him in this way. "They think that because they are foreigners they can trample on the rights of Mexicans."
Following the dissemination of Eulogio's story on social media, the mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, reported that the local social services agency visited him to offer support and financial assistance. The mayor stated, "We are very aware and we are going to accompany him of course because the person has a need and we must accompany him, and we want to grant him a scholarship for people with disabilities that can be very helpful for this person."
In response to these incidents, Mayor Patrón Laviada has called for respect for all Mexicans and local traditions. "We invite those who have decided to come to live in this city and are from outside, to embrace our traditions, our customs and, above all, to respect the peace and harmony with which we Meridians live."
