Bus Passengers Endure 24-Hour Nightmare in Quintana Roo After Engine Fire and Breakdowns

Passengers waiting by the roadside after a bus breakdown in Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo — A group of about 50 passengers endured a 24-hour ordeal on roads in Quintana Roo after their bus trip was plagued by an engine fire, a tire blowout, and mechanical failures.

The passengers had hired the bus company Tour Ejecutivo Los Acosta for the journey. The trouble began near Tulum when the first bus assigned to the trip suffered an engine fire, forcing passengers to wait by the roadside for about four hours.

The situation worsened when a second support bus sent by the company experienced a tire blowout on the route toward Bacalar, reportedly due to excessive speed. This incident left passengers stranded again for approximately five hours while they waited for assistance.

A third vehicle arrived four hours later but traveled at a significantly reduced speed due to apparent mechanical issues, further prolonging the trip.

The series of incidents caused passengers to spend more than a full day on the road, resulting in financial losses from missed work and professional commitments.

Frustrated by a lack of clear information from the drivers and company staff, the affected passengers announced they will file a formal complaint with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) and state transportation authorities. They plan to demand refunds for their tickets and a review of the company’s fleet maintenance.
