Nachicocom, Quintana Roo — A passenger bus overturned during the early hours of the morning, around 2:00 a.m., upon entering the town of Nachicocom in Quintana Roo, leaving at least 18 people injured, five of them with serious injuries.
The incident reportedly occurred after the driver, traveling from Tabasco with a final destination to the Cancún area, allegedly fell asleep while heading toward Chetumal.
The scale of the accident prompted an intense mobilization of emergency crews who worked for several hours to free passengers trapped among the twisted metal of the bus from the Acosta company.
Paramedics from the Rhino group, the first to arrive at the scene, located several victims immobilized inside the unit; four remained pinned, including two minors aged 10 and 11 who were rescued in the initial maneuvers.
Both were immediately transported along with an adult woman and a baby, while ambulances from Albatros and members of La Greem Bacalar joined the operation at the height of Juan Sarabia to reinforce the stabilization of the injured, who were ultimately handed over with vital signs and in stable condition.
During the inspection inside the bus, it was confirmed that a 50-year-old woman had lost an arm after becoming trapped between fragments of the bodywork, while the 11-year-old minor suffered the amputation of a finger for the same reason.
Inside, two additional victims remained pinned, including a pregnant woman, reported out of danger and with fetal cardiac activity.
Firefighters from Chetumal and personnel from the Medical Unit of Firefighters and Medical Emergencies of the South, supported by the Red Cross, took on the final rescue, which lasted nearly four hours due to the complexity of the structural collapse.
Authorities continue to investigate the exact causes of the overturn and remain updated on the medical progress of those affected.
