José María Morelos. After nearly five years without being held, the customary bullfights will once again be part of the traditional festival in honor of the Niño Dios, scheduled from December 18 to 23 at the Expo Morelos.
In an interview, Simón Tuyub Canté, recently appointed president of the palqueros, explained that although the festival has continued in recent years, the bullfights had been suspended after deputies of the XV Legislature approved the Animal Welfare Law, which, among other things, prohibits bullfights and cockfights in Quintana Roo.
He noted that this measure caused concern among residents due to the risk of losing one of the most deeply rooted customs of the municipality.
This year, he assured, the main objective is to rescue the bullfighting tradition and restore the order that characterized it.
The bullfights will begin promptly at 4 p.m., just as in previous editions, when the event ended early and favored family gatherings.
Similarly, the holding of the vaquería and daily tardeada events was confirmed, which will take place after each bullfight and conclude around midnight. No mass dances are planned.
Tuyub Canté emphasized that preserving this celebration is essential to keeping the cultural identity of José María Morelos alive.
“It is a tradition that must continue for our children and grandchildren,” he said finally.
