Holbox, Quintana Roo — Raúl Escalante Jiménez, the brother-in-law of Lázaro Cárdenas municipal president Nivardo Mena Villanueva, has been elected president of the ejido commissariat of Isla Holbox, succeeding Francisca Coral Santana.
Escalante Jiménez, who served as treasurer in the previous commissariat administration, won the unanimous vote of members attending the assembly. His slate includes Maritza Betancourt Serrano as secretary, Julia Marilú Becelis Ordaz as treasurer, and José Elvis Moguel Canto as president of the oversight council.
Nivardo Mena Villanueva, the Lázaro Cárdenas municipal president, was born on Holbox and owns one of the two ferry companies that serve the island.
Pledge to Protect Communal Lands
After taking office, Escalante Jiménez promised to protect the ejido’s communal lands and to govern with transparency and unity.
Coral Santana had led not only the Isla Holbox ejido commissariat but also the advisory council of the Yum Balam protected area, a body that must convene to name a new president.
