Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The Blue Flag was raised at Playa Norte and Playa Centro in Isla Mujeres for the 2025-2026 season, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to environmental preservation, tourism quality, and natural resource conservation. The ceremony, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez, highlighted the international recognition of these beaches for meeting stringent environmental and safety standards.

A Symbol of Environmental Excellence

"The Blue Flag is more than a symbol; it reflects the daily effort of our people and Isla Mujeres’ commitment to the environment. We will continue working to ensure our beaches remain a source of pride for Mexico and the world," said Mayor Atenea Gómez during the event.

The Blue Flag certification evaluates 33 criteria across four categories: environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and safety services. Playa Norte and Playa Centro achieved scores of 96.04 and 94.87, respectively, placing them among the world’s top coastal destinations.

Sustained Efforts Behind the Recognition

The distinction follows continuous efforts, including daily beach cleanups and the removal of 2,266.64 metric tons of sargassum so far this year. Mayor Gómez emphasized that the certification safeguards natural heritage for future generations while boosting the local economy. From September 2024 to July 2025, Isla Mujeres welcomed nearly 5 million tourists.

The mayor also acknowledged the dedication of workers from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) of Isla Mujeres, who perform daily maintenance and cleaning tasks. As a token of appreciation, these workers will receive an economic incentive this year.

Distinguished Attendees

The ceremony included Joaquín Arturo Díaz Ríos, a member of the FEE Global Board of Directors, President of the International Blue Flag Jury, and Executive Director of FEE Mexico; Hugo Iván Sánchez Montalvo, Secretary General of the City Council; Dayana Alejandra Pérez Medina, Director of ZOFEMAT Isla Mujeres; and Flor Cecilia Narváez Segovia, Municipal Treasurer.

The Blue Flag program, an international eco-label, recognizes beaches that meet high standards in sustainability, safety, and visitor services. Isla Mujeres’ continued participation underscores its leadership in coastal conservation and tourism excellence.
