Cancún — Benito Juárez is advancing toward the creation of the country’s first Institute of Protection and Animal Welfare, as part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the care and attention of animals.

The municipality could position itself as the first in the country to have an Animal Protection and Welfare Institute, which consolidates as part of the various works and actions that have been carried out on this issue, and which recorded unanimous approval from all councilors of this headquarters.

Municipal councilor Ana Patricia Peralta celebrated the approval by the City Council of the initiative presented to consolidate said Institute, which she affirmed would become the first of its kind in the country.

The Benito Juárez City Council unanimously approved the creation of the new institute.

“The creation of the institute will be worked on in joint commissions through the meticulous work of each of the councilors, but it is a great proposal that will continue to strengthen the care of our animals in Benito Juárez,” she said.

She affirmed that the creation of this entity will not represent any bureaucratic increase for the municipal government, but rather a reorganization of the department to define seven important specialized areas that are: legal; inspection and surveillance; veterinary medical direction; education and adoptions; administration and finance; registration and statistics; and emergencies and rescues.

The institute will have seven specialized areas of care and protection.

She added that, in the same way, it will allow the creation of a governing board, where there will be a voice from civil associations and comprehensive attention will be given in prevention, sanction, rescue, medical assistance and education.

“We are going to continue working very strongly on one of the priorities of our government, which is the care of all the animals in our city,” she stated.

Civil associations will participate in the governing board of the new organization.

It should be noted that the initiative presented by the Municipal President and councilors Paula Pech Vázquez and Lorena Manjarrez Cardona was referred to the joint commissions of Government, Internal Regime and Anti-corruption; Public Health, Social Assistance and Animal Protection; and Tourism, Ecology and Environment, for its study, assessment and corresponding ruling, in accordance with Article 153 of the Internal Government Regulations of the City Council.
