Orange Walk, Belize — Belize security forces intercepted a plane carrying approximately 1,200 kilograms of cocaine in a major drug bust near the Mexican border on Thursday, authorities announced.

The Belize Defence Force, Coast Guard, and National Police conducted the joint operation in Neufeld, Orange Walk district, following radar tracking and ground deployment. Officials said the precision strike represents one of the most significant blows to drug trafficking in the border region.

The interception came after authorities discovered a key logistical element earlier in the day: a vehicle containing aviation fuel and communication equipment secured by patrols. This find allowed security forces to anticipate the contact point and catch the aircraft operators in the act.

Two people were arrested at the scene and handed over to judicial authorities for investigation into their origins and potential links to transnational cartels.

Neufeld remains under tight security as elite units maintain a perimeter around the area. The deployment aims to secure the drug shipment and aircraft while searching for possible escape routes or temporary storage facilities that criminal networks might have established in the remote zone.

The location is strategically used by traffickers due to its proximity to trails leading to southern Quintana Roo, Mexico.

With over a ton of drugs removed from circulation, Belizean authorities reinforced their zero-tolerance stance against illicit trafficking. Mexican officials are maintaining vigilance for potential spillover effects from the operation.

Authorities expect to hold an official press conference in coming hours to detail the identities of those captured and the estimated international market value of the seized cocaine.
