Bacalar’s San Joaquin Fair Returns August 13-18 With 80,000 Pesos in Prize Money

Traditional San Joaquin Fair in Bacalar, Quintana Roo

Bacalar, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Bacalar is set to host its traditional San Joaquin Fair from August 13 to 18, featuring cultural, family and traditional activities, including a grand vaqueria with more than 80,000 pesos in prizes.

Municipal trustee Astrid Concepción González Buenfil said the festivities will kick off with an inauguration on Thursday, August 13, and wrap up on Monday, August 18. The fair is one of the municipality’s most important traditions.

One of the highlights will be the Magna Vaquería on Friday, August 14, which will award more than 80,000 pesos in prizes. For the second consecutive year, organizers will also present a special recognition to child dancers, aiming to encourage younger generations to take part in the tradition.

Local authorities expect a significant number of visitors during the fair, particularly due to the summer vacation period, which could boost business for hotels, restaurants, shops and tour operators.

González Buenfil noted that Bacalar is currently in a peak tourist season and expressed hopes of welcoming both local and national visitors.

“We are in high season because of the vacation period, and we have great expectations for visitors. We hope for a lot of tourism — don’t miss the chance to come see us,” she said.

She added that the municipal government is coordinating with security authorities to ensure the events run smoothly and that residents and visitors can enjoy the celebration safely.

Other planned activities include a family horseback ride in the afternoon, along with surprises and other events on the fair’s agenda.

“This week we kick off the grand opening. We have surprises, prizes and a spectacular family ride in the afternoon,” she said.

Authorities invited families and tourists to visit Bacalar from August 13 to 18 to take part in the fair and enjoy the town’s traditions, cuisine and attractions.
