Bacalar, Quintana Roo — During the holiday season known as “Guadalupe-Reyes,” the use of fireworks in the municipality of Bacalar will be restricted to prevent harm to vulnerable populations and animals, according to the Municipal Civil Protection Directorate.
The agency’s head, Marcelino Vargas, stated that fireworks have become a sensitive issue for citizens due to the various impacts resulting from their use, particularly among minors, individuals with neurological conditions, and animals, both domestic and stray, as they are affected in the same way.
Vargas explained that this year only the burning of lights and sparklers will be authorized, as explosive fireworks have been prohibited for years. He assured that authorities will closely monitor compliance with these regulations, both by sellers and the public who purchase them. Only about 11 outlets are authorized to sell lights and sparklers.
Similarly, Vargas urged citizens to closely supervise children and the elderly, as burning fireworks always poses a risk to those who use them. He emphasized the need to take proper precautions to avoid any incidents, which can occur due to any small oversight and affect people or animals.
Finally, regarding the burning of “Año Viejo” (Old Year) effigies, he stressed that this practice is completely prohibited. Authorities will conduct regular patrols to ensure authorized vendors are not selling explosive fireworks and to prevent residents from making effigies and proceeding with such burnings.
He also indicated that sanctions will be applied to those who fail to comply, although he believes this will not be necessary as the community has already been urged to avoid such activities.
