Authorities Target Cancún Vape Shop in Crackdown on Illegal Sales

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Authorities conducted an operation in Cancún targeting the “Jamesbong” vape shop, which sells electronic cigarettes and related products whose commercialization is heavily restricted under Mexican law.

The deployment involved officers from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office Criminal Investigation Agency, supported by the National Guard and State Preventive Police, on Monday as part of health and commercial verification and surveillance actions. This comes amid existing prohibitions that limit the import, distribution, promotion, and sale of e-cigarettes and vapes in the country.

Under current legal frameworks, the sale of these devices is restricted by federal decrees and health regulations, considered a public health risk, particularly among children and adolescents.

During the operation, officials inspected the establishment to verify compliance with regulations, the origin of products, labeling, and potential administrative or health violations. Authorities have not yet officially reported any seizures, sanctions, or closure of the business.

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) has reiterated that vape sales in Mexico lack health authorization and that these devices contain potentially harmful substances while promoting nicotine consumption.

This operation adds to other actions implemented across the country, including in the Mexican Caribbean, where officials aim to curb illegal vape sales despite the ongoing ban.
