Cancún, Quintana Roo — Local authorities in the municipality of Benito Juárez are conducting preventive measures following the National Meteorological System's forecast, including inspections of temporary shelters to be used in case of emergencies.
Antonio Riveroll Ribbon, Director of Civil Protection for Benito Juárez, stated that after projections indicated up to 17 tropical storms and hurricanes could form in the Atlantic Ocean—where the Yucatán Peninsula is located—officials will begin assembling emergency committees and evaluating shelter facilities.
Preemptive Measures Underway
Riveroll Ribbon emphasized that preparatory work is already in progress.
"All necessary efforts are being made. Right now, we are focusing on assessing shelter capacities, finalizing details, and ensuring public awareness campaigns are ready so residents know how to respond in case of a natural disaster. We are already visiting shelters and completing all required procedures," he explained.
The exact number and operational status of shelters will be announced once the state and municipal cyclone committees are formally established, a standard procedure ahead of each hurricane season. The Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico hurricane season officially begins on June 1.
Caution Amid Forecast Uncertainty
Regarding the National Meteorological System's prediction of 17 potential storms, Riveroll Ribbon cautioned that the actual number may vary.
"We must remain vigilant because even if only one hurricane makes landfall, it could be enough to create a serious situation for Cancún and the state. While we are well-prepared, there is always risk when facing natural phenomena," he said.
He added that while the forecast provides valuable insight for planning, it does not guarantee all predicted storms will materialize.
Quintana Roo at Higher Risk
Quintana Roo remains the Mexican state most vulnerable to hurricane impacts due to its geographic exposure.
Riveroll Ribbon noted that the state serves as a "direct gateway to the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic," leaving the Yucatán Peninsula particularly susceptible. He stressed the importance of maintaining preparedness efforts to mitigate potential damage.
Further updates on shelter availability and emergency protocols will be released following the official formation of hurricane response committees.
