Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A criminal cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) operating in Playa del Carmen has been dismantled by authorities in the state of Quintana Roo. The operation resulted in the capture of 13 individuals and the seizure of high-powered weapons.
Operation Leads to Multiple Arrests and Weapon Seizures
The security operation was initiated following an initial arrest in August of individuals who were transporting heavy weaponry in a vehicle bearing cartel identification. The cell was led by a woman identified as Sara Yazmín, known by the alias “La Miche,” who sought to consolidate the group's control in the Riviera Maya and expand its illicit activities in the region, primarily through extortion and small-scale drug sales.
The police operation successfully confiscated 18 firearms, including M4 rifles for exclusive military use, and tactical equipment during the raids. The arrest of the leader and her collaborators is part of coordinated efforts to reduce the influence of organized crime in tourist destinations, generating a positive impact on the security of the area.
Historically, the Riviera Maya has been a strategic point for criminal activity, but recent actions demonstrate progress in the recovery of institutional control. Additionally, authorities reported other relevant cases in the region, such as an attempted femicide in Tulum and actions against illegal logging on properties in Playa del Carmen. A detailed report on the advances in the fight against various crimes in the entity will be presented soon.
