Man Kidnapped by Armed Group in Chetumal Neighborhood

Police cordon off the scene of a kidnapping in Chetumal's Payo Obispo neighborhood

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — During the early hours of Thursday, December 4, an armed group broke into a home in the Payo Obispo neighborhood and deprived a man of his liberty before fleeing to an unknown location.

The incident occurred around 00:50 hours when a call to the 911 emergency number alerted authorities to a possible kidnapping at a property located on Retorno 21, between Retorno 22 and Calle Celul.

Elements of the Quintana Roo Police immediately went to the site and, upon confirming the report, proceeded to cordon off the area to preserve the scene. Witnesses recounted that five armed subjects violently entered the residence and forcibly removed a man identified as Luis Alberto Borges Joaquín, 39 years old, who was placed into a gray Honda CR-V SUV in which the assailants fled.

Minutes later, personnel from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating the Crime of Forced Disappearance arrived, accompanied by agents from the Investigation Police and a prosecutor from the Public Ministry. The authorities carried out the initial procedures inside and outside the home, which was ultimately secured to continue with the corresponding investigations.

Given the seriousness of the event, a Code Red was activated, generating a wide deployment of police corporations in different areas of the city with the aim of locating the vehicle involved and finding those responsible. Agents implemented checkpoints, patrols, and strategic routes on main roads and surrounding neighborhoods.

After more than half an hour of operations, the search was suspended without positive results. However, the State Attorney General’s Office reported that it maintains an open investigation to clarify the case, locate the victim’s whereabouts, and capture the armed group involved in this illegal deprivation of liberty.
