Argentine Woman’s Tulum Fall Leads to Repatriation

Tulum, Mexico — An Argentine woman is set to be repatriated after falling from the third floor of her daughter's residence in Tulum, sustaining severe injuries including fractures to her spine and both legs. The incident has prompted a coordinated effort between her family and Argentine authorities to facilitate her return home for medical care.

The woman has been identified as Karina Alejandra Rott, a resident of Las Grutas, Argentina, who suffered a severe accident in Quintana Roo. Her sister, Melly Rott, confirmed on Monday morning that Karina is "stable, better," but remains with multiple fractures and extremely serious injuries following the fall in Tulum.

According to her sister's account to Argentine media, the accident occurred when Karina "slipped. She fell from a third floor." She was initially taken to a hospital in Tulum, but due to delays in her treatment, her daughter transferred her to another hospital. "She was there for more than 20 hours waiting. The only thing that was done was to stop the bleeding," Melly Rott detailed.

Karina's injuries include fractures in both legs—one of which is an open fracture—as well as injuries to her wrist and to the L2 and L5 vertebrae. Medical professionals warned that without urgent surgery, she could lose mobility or even require an amputation, creating a critical need for her family to seek assistance from authorities.

The accident occurred on October 18. Despite the gravity of her condition, the family reports that Karina has not received adequate care in local public hospitals. She was subsequently transferred first to a hospital in Playa del Carmen and then to the Hospital General Agustín O’Horán in Mérida, Yucatán. However, her relatives state that she has not received the necessary treatment at either medical facility.

Following extensive efforts by the family, Argentine authorities are reportedly making an aircraft available to transport the seriously injured woman from Mexico back to her home country. The family had previously stated that they started a collection for her medical expenses, noting that the community responded wonderfully. They indicated that her surgery required 40 thousand dollars, with hospital admission alone costing 10 thousand dollars—a significant sum for a woman who works in a supermarket in Las Grutas.

The repatriation is now expected to be a matter of hours, after which the woman will begin her recovery in Argentina.
