Cancún, Mexico — The Mexican Association of Insurance and Bonding Agents (AMASFAC) has issued a public alert regarding fraud committed by individuals posing as insurance agents. These individuals, who are actually claims managers, are targeting people who purchase medical or auto insurance policies.

Ricardo Rosado Mañón, the national president of AMASFAC, announced the alert during a regional meeting held in Cancún. He stated that before the end of 2025, the association will launch a campaign to share experiences related to purchasing insurance.

"Unfortunately, bad news travels faster than good news, and cases of fraud have been disseminated through social networks, creating a negative perception," he said.

The executive warned about fraud related to insurance, primarily through external managers who inflate costs in medical expense insurance, and through fake insurance companies that operate without legal registration before the National Insurance and Bonding Commission (CNSF). While they do not have statistics on the increase in this type of crime, he emphasized that these acts are not committed by insurance companies.

"The insurance agents throughout all of Mexico have a license and a registration with the authorities, so before contracting their services, it is important that people approach and verify that the person has a certification," he stated.

Among the types of fraud detected by "External Managers" are those involving Medical Expense Insurance, where "help" is offered with policy procedures, but they charge inflated costs and, in collusion with hospitals or doctors, carry out a high percentage of the claims.

"It is dangerous that a person, in order to obtain help, hands over their personal data to these managers, who have even contracted policies without consent," he affirmed.

Another crime is fraud with auto insurance policies, where the cost of the monthly premium is increased, and when an accident occurs, it turns out that the manager never made any payment to the insurance company.

He explained that to avoid fraud, one should verify the company's authorization on the CNSF portal and not believe promises to eliminate or reduce deductibles. Payments should also not be made in advance or as additional payments to external agents. The registration of the insurance company can be verified on the official CNSF portal: listainstituciones.cnsf.gob.mx.

He commented that there are currently more than one hundred insurance companies throughout the country, and Quintana Roo is among the top regions for the acquisition of property protection policies against hurricanes, although a greater culture of protection is still needed.
