Altares of 24 States to be Featured in Day of the Dead Celebration in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Altars from 24 states of the Republic will be installed in the 28 de Julio plaza as part of the Janal Pixán artistic and cultural program organized by the government of Playa del Carmen. Authorities announced the major traditional celebration this Wednesday, which will include the opening of the municipal cemetery where activities related to the date will take place.

The Municipal President, Estefanía Mercado Asencio, stated that a major security operation will be mounted to provide guarantees to residents and visitors from October 31 to November 3.

"The 28 de Julio plaza and its surroundings will once again become a great pedestrian plaza, where Playa families will once again enjoy art and tradition. A major security operation will be deployed with Municipal Police and Civil Protection and Firefighters so that, as in all the events we have held, families can enjoy with total confidence," stated Mercado Asencio.

A Full Agenda of Cultural Activities

The Secretary of Tourism of Playa del Carmen, Estefanía Hernández Flores, announced an agenda full of diverse activities as part of the promotion of the destination.

"On Thursday, October 30, you will experience the lighting of the grand Janal Pixán altar, the exhibition of the offering 'muestras de altares de México' (samples of altars from Mexico), an exhibition of Mexican crafts, and artistic exhibitions in the amphitheater of the 28 de Julio plaza and Puerto Aventuras," said Hernández Flores.

On Saturday, November 1, the parade "U’Xiimbal Pizano’ob. Paseo de los Pixanes" will be celebrated, departing at 6:30 PM from the Lázaro Cárdenas park in the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta neighborhood to the municipal cemetery, located in the same neighborhood—one of the most visually striking traditions of this season.

All these activities will take place mostly in the afternoon at the mentioned sites and will be free of charge.

This is the second festival of its kind organized by the current administration, whose officials stated that with this they seek to preserve one of the traditions that causes the most anticipation in the country's calendar of festivities.
