Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Merchants in the municipality of Bacalar are on high alert following the detection of counterfeit banknotes, primarily 500-peso bills, generating significant concern within the local commercial sector.
A recent incident occurred at a fruit stand, where the employee, amid high demand and a fast-paced sales environment, accepted a counterfeit bill without noticing it was fake. According to the affected individual, the speed at which transactions are conducted makes it difficult to inspect each bill with the necessary detail, allowing the forgeries to go unnoticed during the workday.
The merchant, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals, issued an urgent call to the public to exercise extreme caution when accepting cash payments. He stated that during periods of high customer traffic, such as on busy days or during rapid transactions, special attention should be paid to the bills being accepted. Furthermore, he asked local authorities to reinforce surveillance measures to prevent this illicit practice from continuing to affect the small businesses of Bacalar, which, he mentioned, are the most vulnerable to this type of fraud.
Authorities, in coordination with merchants, have recommended being attentive to some distinctive signs of the counterfeit bills. One of the first precautionary measures is to verify the texture of the bill, as authentic bills have perceptible reliefs to the touch. It is also advised to check the security threads, watermarks, and the security features that change color when the bill is tilted against the light. Additionally, the use of special marker pens or electronic devices to detect counterfeit bills is suggested.
The circulation of fake money not only affects merchants but also puts the local economy at risk and can generate distrust among consumers. It is vital that both businesses and citizens are informed and alert to prevent this type of crime and ensure safer transactions for everyone.
