Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the coasts of Playa del Carmen exhibited unusual conditions with the emergence of freshwater springs, locally known as "ojos de agua," and strong waves accompanied by a heavy swell. Authorities have suspended boat departures to Isla Larga as a precautionary measure.
An Unexpected Natural Phenomenon
A rare natural occurrence has drawn the attention of locals and tourists in Playa del Carmen: multiple freshwater springs bubbling up directly from the beach sand. The largest have been observed near 10th Street and in front of the iconic Portal Maya, though smaller ones have appeared along the shoreline.
These freshwater upwellings, uncommon in this specific area, have sparked curiosity and surprise. While not currently deemed hazardous, authorities and experts are monitoring their development. The phenomenon may be linked to shifts in underground currents or the water table, potentially exacerbated by recent weather conditions.
Adverse Maritime Conditions
Simultaneously, strong waves and heavy swells have been reported along the beaches of Solidaridad municipality. This situation has prompted port authorities and Civil Protection to implement preventive measures to ensure the safety of boaters and swimmers.
Suspension of Boat Departures and Safety Recommendations
Due to the rough sea conditions, departures of small vessels to Isla Larga have been suspended until weather and maritime conditions improve. Personnel from the National Institute of Ecology and Natural Areas (INEA) are conducting continuous patrols to monitor the situation and enforce safety protocols.
Authorities advise visitors and residents to:
- Follow lifeguard instructions and heed beach warning flags.
- Avoid entering the water during strong waves or without advanced swimming skills.
- Stay clear of breakwaters and jetties, where waves are more intense.
- Stay informed through official Civil Protection channels regarding the resumption of nautical activities.
"The safety of our citizens and visitors is our priority. Given the strong waves and heavy swell, we have suspended departures to Isla Larga. We urge everyone to take precautions and follow recommendations," officials stated.
Though beaches remained open until 4:00 PM the previous day, the public is advised to stay alert for any changes in sea conditions. The combination of these phenomena—freshwater springs and rough seas—highlights the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of Caribbean coastlines.
