Akumal, Quintana Roo — Hotel occupancy in Akumal rose to 80.4% in the first quarter of 2026, up from 77.8% a year earlier, bucking a downward trend across Mexico’s beach destinations and in nearby Playa del Carmen.

The 2.6 percentage-point gain placed the small Quintana Roo resort town among the busiest tourism centers in the country, according to an analysis of Tourism Department (Sectur) statistics compiled from the federal DataTur monitoring system.

Akumal ranked fourth nationally among the 70 tourism centers DataTur tracks, and it finished 10.3 points above the 70.1% average recorded at beach destinations during the same period.

March surge lifts Akumal to second place

Measured on its own, March was even stronger. Occupancy climbed to 83.3% from 75.8% in March 2025, a gain of 7.5 points, which put Akumal second in the national rankings for the month behind only Playacar.

Playacar led the first-quarter table with 91.4%, up 1.5 points from 89.9% a year earlier. Cancún was essentially flat, slipping to 78.4% from 78.5%.

Playa del Carmen moved the other way, falling to 77.3% from 81.5%, a drop of 4.2 points. Among the four Quintana Roo destinations in the comparison, Akumal posted the largest increase.

National averages slip

The gains in Akumal contrast with the broader performance of Mexico’s hotel sector. Across the 70 monitored tourism centers, average occupancy fell to 59.2% in January-March 2026 from 60.5% a year earlier, a decline of 1.3 points.

Beach destinations slipped 1.5 points, from 71.6% to 70.1%, over the same period.

The figures cover the tourism centers as defined by DataTur and are not intended to represent occupancy across the entire municipalities in which they sit.
