Cancún, Mexico — Irish low-cost carrier Aer Lingus has announced its first direct flight route between Cancún and Dublin, set to launch in 2026. The seasonal service will operate three times weekly from January to April, utilizing Airbus A330-300 aircraft, with fares starting at 291 euros (6,330 pesos) per one-way trip.
Meeting Demand for Winter Tourism
Lynne Embleton, CEO of Aer Lingus, stated in a press release, “Our research shows strong customer interest in new travel experiences, particularly to seasonal destinations outside the summer period. Mexico, with its tropical climate, addresses the growing demand for winter sun while offering a rich combination of history, culture, and cuisine.”
The flights will run from January 6 to April 29, departing on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Cancún marks Aer Lingus’ first Mexican destination, though the airline already serves over 10 U.S. cities, as well as Toronto, Canada, and Bridgetown, Barbados. Its network also spans 15 European countries and Morocco.
Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Ties
The route announcement coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Mexico. Carolina Zaragoza Flores, Mexico’s ambassador to Ireland, emphasized the significance of the new connection: “This milestone, driven by growing bilateral trade—which positions Mexico as Ireland’s top Latin American partner and Ireland as Mexico’s sixth-largest EU trade partner—will undoubtedly foster stronger economic ties and advance toward a strategic partnership.”
Aer Lingus, founded in 1936, has been part of the International Airlines Group (IAG) since its acquisition in 2015. IAG also owns Iberia and British Airways.
