Cancún, Mexico — A scandal involving transport providers at Cancún International Airport has erupted once again on social media, following the dissemination of new cases of excessive fees charged to tourists for transfers between terminals within the same airport complex. Despite being a long-standing and frequently denounced problem, authorities have yet to bring order to a practice that damages the reputation of Mexico's primary tourist destination.
The most recent complaint was published by user Jorge Martín on Threads, who exposed the case of two German tourists who were charged 1,430 pesos to be transported from Terminal 4 to Terminal 3, a journey that does not exceed one kilometer and would normally take five minutes. "This is truly called 'gouging,' they are leaving the destination in an even worse state," he wrote, generating a cascade of comments from people who claim to have experienced the same situation.
The testimonies coincide: transport operators at the airport deceive travelers by telling them that the free inter-terminal shuttle service is suspended, delayed, or that walking between terminals is prohibited. They take advantage of the urgency of those with connecting flights to offer taxis at exorbitant prices, in a form of institutionalized extortion that occurs in plain sight of local and federal authorities.
Dante Benavides, another user, reported that he and his sister paid 800 pesos for an internal transfer after not having enough time to wait for the free transport. "Right upon arriving, we saw other girls from Mexico City to whom the same thing had been done. A shame that they are ripping off our country like this," he wrote on social media.
Other tourists have reported fees of up to 10,000 pesos for short journeys, which has turned the airport into a critical point of abuse.
