Abandoned Construction Project Poses Hazards on Playa del Carmen’s Xel-Ha Avenue

An open trench and construction materials block part of Xel-Ha Avenue in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — An abandoned pipe installation project on Xel-Ha Avenue has created hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians, with residents reporting traffic conflicts, accidents, and safety concerns for the past two months.

Residents from the Vía Arbolada and Guadalupana neighborhoods said the work began without notice and has progressed irregularly, leaving open trenches that reduce traffic flow on one of the main access roads to the area.

Eugenia Gasca, a resident of Vía Arbolada, said, “We are very affected. They started two months ago and never notified us. There were only two people working and we never saw any progress. There have been crashes and many problems that I don’t understand why they don’t see.”

Students Face Particular Danger

The situation worsens during school arrival and dismissal times when students cross the roadway between vehicles and obstacles, increasing the risk of accidents.

“When it’s school drop-off or pick-up time, it’s a problem. A child could get hit by a car or fall into a trench. There’s no space to get out and nobody pays attention,” Gasca added.

Nighttime Traffic Complications

During evenings, the passage of personnel transport trucks and dump trucks further complicates circulation, increasing danger for both motorists and pedestrians.

Residents have called on authorities to supervise the project, ensure its prompt completion, and prevent continued risks on this important Playa del Carmen thoroughfare.
