Quintana Roo, along with 30 other states in Mexico, has been included in the United States Department of State's travel advisory update. This warning to U.S. citizens is due to the increasing presence of organized crime in these regions. The U.S. government is advising its citizens to avoid traveling to areas with high rates of violence, kidnappings, and thefts.
Tourist hotspots like Cancun are experiencing a decline in visitor numbers as a result. Despite the escalating crime rates, Cancun's municipal authorities appear indifferent to revising their public security strategies.
Recent incidents have included the kidnapping and subsequent murder of a coordinator from the Andrés Quintana Roo Taxi Drivers Union. Additionally, bodies showing signs of torture have been found at various locations across the region. The escalating violence is spreading throughout the state, leading to a crisis in the tourism sector that is expected to worsen in the upcoming months.
