In the Mexican Caribbean paradise of Playa del Carmen, not everything is as idyllic as it seems. A staggering 95% of the elderly population are compelled to work, often when they should be enjoying their retirement.

Dagoberto Holguín Pérez, leader of the Unit for Attention to People with Disabilities and the Elderly in Solidaridad, reveals that only 5% of the 27,000 elderly residents in the municipality have their retirement secured.

Many of these elderly individuals face abandonment and even violence, frequently from their own family members. There have been reported instances of relatives dispossessing the elderly.

Holguín Pérez also emphasizes the training that has been given to public transport operators to ensure they treat the elderly with respect and dignity. Furthermore, the government of Solidaridad continues its policy of labor inclusion through inclusive job fairs.
