The Maya Train has introduced a new direct service from Playa del Carmen to Mérida. This route, which previously required a stopover in Cancún, now allows passengers to travel directly from Playa del Carmen to the capital of Yucatán.
On March 16, the train service began operating on its 5 North segment, running from Playa del Carmen stations to Cancún Airport via Puerto Morelos. However, the direct route to Mérida, starting from the Solidaridad municipality, was not launched at that time. As a result, passengers wishing to travel from Playa del Carmen to Mérida on the same day had to stop in Cancún and wait nearly four hours to board the train again.
Now, according to the Maya Train ticketing system, tickets for the direct route from Playa del Carmen to Mérida are available. This eliminates the need for a lengthy stopover at Cancún Airport. The train typically pauses for one to two minutes at each station to allow passengers to board.
The new daily service to Mérida departs from Playa del Carmen at 5:30 p.m. The journey includes stops at seven stations, featuring popular tourist destinations in Yucatán such as Izamal, Valladolid, and Chichén Itzá. The total travel time is approximately five hours. Ticket prices range from 441.50 pesos for the special tourist fare, up to 1,879.50 pesos for international premiere tickets.
A return service from Mérida to Playa del Carmen is also now available, with a daily departure at 7 a.m. However, the Maya Train service from Playa del Carmen still has some limitations. It currently does not offer direct routes to Palenque or Campeche. Passengers wishing to travel to these destinations by train will need to arrive at Cancún Airport and wait for the next day's departure at 9:30 a.m.
