In an effort to hear the voices, concerns, and aspirations of the youth, Cancun Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa spearheaded the "Meztli Fest" festival. This event was designed to encourage children's participation in the National Consultation "Can You Hear Me?" 2024.
Nuria Fernández Espresate, Director General of the National DIF System, and Verónica Lezama Espinosa, Honorary President of the Quintana Roo DIF, joined the Governor at the festival. The event, held in the park and field of Villas Otoch Paraíso in Cancun, offered recreational, cultural, and sports activities. These were provided by state government agencies, DIF municipal systems from Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Lázaro Cárdenas, and civil society.
Governor Mara Lezama emphasized the importance of understanding the thoughts, feelings, and dreams of the youth in Quintana Roo. She believes their input is crucial for peace-building and generating social welfare. This year, 75,000 surveys have already been conducted in Quintana Roo. The government is keen to gather more responses, as every opinion is valuable in shaping the direction of this progressive, humanist government where the child's voice is a priority.
The festival included activities such as inflatables, mascots, dances, a children's rally, football, face painting, storytelling, creative presentations, animal exhibitions, and break dancing. The National Consultation "Can You Hear Me?" 2024 was also conducted in various formats: online and physical questionnaires and drawings. These were aimed at children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 years old.
Verónica Lezama Espinosa, Honorary President of the state DIF, underscored the importance of the festival as a platform to encourage children and adolescents to participate in surveys. These surveys aim to enhance the state of Quintana Roo and ensure the voices of the youth are heard and considered.
