“Rescue Mission: 15 Dogs Saved from Rooftops Before Hurricane Strikes”

Two dogs separated by a metal gate that divides a room into two sections, with one dog on each side. Each dog has a bowl and there is a toy on the floor.

The Animal Control, Assistance, and Zoonosis Center (Cebiam) in Solidaridad, Playa del Carmen, received 15 reports of dogs abandoned on rooftops ahead of Hurricane "Beryl". The team took swift action to save these pets. Despite these efforts, the issue of families leaving their pets on rooftops, exposed to harsh weather conditions, continues to persist.

Jennifer Campos, head of the department, explained the situation. "During the hurricane, we received 15 reports over two days. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that no dog was left on a rooftop in the storm," she said.

Campos emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that summonses were issued for those responsible for abandoning their pets. These individuals are required to present themselves by Thursday. "We are working closely with those who report these incidents. We may not be able to publicly identify the offenders, but we are certainly asking questions," added Campos.

Campos also noted that while most people did take in or rescue their pets following the reports, there was one instance where a dog was returned to a rooftop. In this case, the team intervened and brought the pet to a shelter.

The Animal Control Center in Playa del Carmen currently houses 118 dogs, many of whom were brought in due to extreme heat and the aftermath of the hurricane. The center is seeking to have these dogs adopted as soon as possible to avoid overcrowding.
